5 Lies designed to make you quit…

  • You aren’t qualified
  • You are too busy
  • It’s too hard
  • It’s too easy
  • You can do it next year

Here is the kicker—

There is a percentage of truth in every lie listed above.  Most effective lies have a small portion of truth threaded in them.  It is up to you to turn a deaf ear to the lies that will hinder your accomplishments.

You probably are not 100% qualified.  You may have a lot on your plate.  Your goal might be too hard or seem a little too easy to accomplish. And of course, truth is in all probability; you can start it next year.

But that is not why you listed your goals.

This is where the real challenge and growth lie (pun intended). The resistance. Our muscles grow when we add tension and resistance.  Seth Godin in his book Linchpin: Are You Indispensable?  Defines these destiny-hindering, self-sabotaging lies as Resistance.  He writes: Recognize it for what it is and then defeat it. You will defeat it not by rationalization or even a calm discussion. You will defeat it with single-minded effort, effort so deep and dedicated that it might exhaust you.

It is imperative we not resign to the voice of lies and empower the deception with inaction. Like any fear— we must face it head on and expose it for what it is.  Be militant about it.

It is illegal!

It needs to be arrested immediately. Arrested- charged- trial skipped- and executed! No hesitation. No regret.  This is the only effective way to kill the lies that sell you short and keep you walking a life of insignificance and obscurity.

One of my favorite bloggers, Dan Rockwell writes: I have a pessimist inside me. He tells me what won’t work. When my pessimist wins, he congratulates me for what didn’t happen.  The upside of pessimism is it anticipates problems. The down side of pessimism is stagnation.

Recognize the lie and move forward. Remove all doubt! You can do this.

What lies have hindered you from accomplishing your goals?  How have you overcome them?
